For many people, interior design appears to be primarily about picking out the pretty things you sigh over in pictures: the lampshades, the cushions, the rugs. But this is far from the case in reality. Every interior designer knows that the structure of the room is ultimately more important than the things you put in it. A cushion is easy to switch out, but the architecture, the joinery, the flooring and the lighting – these are the things that dictate the feel of a room. Lighting is particularly important for the mood of a space, so why do we spend more time choosing the lampshade than thinking about how we will control the light?
